Lesson 4 - 2nd May 2020

Hello Explorers!
Last lesson, we discussed the passages in the Gospel of Luke in the Zoom meeting and in the quiz. This week, we'll be looking at how to use a topographical map and revise our knowledge of the nature honour you've been completing.
Orienteering Honour
Today we will look at a Topographic Map and explore the following questions. You can also click on the link, download the Orienteering Honour and start completing the requirements of this honour in this lesson.
  1. Explain what a topographic map is, what you expect to find on it, and three uses for it.
  2. Identify at least 20 signs and symbols used on topographic maps.

  2. Ideally, you could also highlight interesting points or colour code different themes.
  3. As with Luke, it is recommended you read as much of John as you can, but if you can't read the whole book, at the very least read these three passages as we will be discussing them next meeting:

Bible Search 1
1. Bible concordance - Watch the video to understand how a Bible concordance works. Some Bibles have a concordance at the back. Check if your Bible has a concordance. You can also check an online Bible and do a search for a key word, eg God. How many verses have you found that match that search?

Health and Fitness 1
1. Revise from last meeting the negative effects of alcohol on the different parts of the body.
Brain
  • Alcohol is a depressant, it causes the signals in the brain to slow down leading to confusion, poor judgement, and incoordination.
  • Alcohol also kills brain cells faster than they can reproduce.
  • Long-term drinking can cause issues in memory, judgement, and learning ability.
Heart
  • Alcohol causes the heart muscle to become inflamed.
  • Alcohol also causes increased amounts of toxic fat to collect around the heart.
Mouth and Oesophagus
  • Alcohol irritates the linings of the throat and oesophagus, i.e. it burns as it goes down.
Liver
  • Alcohol causes the cells in the liver to swell, becoming inflamed.
  • Long-term drinking causes cells to continue dying, eventually causing cirrhosis of the Liver (the liver ceases to function due to excess scar tissue)
Stomach
  • Alcohol irritates the mucus layer of the stomach's interior, which leads to gastric or duodenal ulcers.
Kidney and Bladder
  • Alcohol irritates the bladder tissue, preventing it from stretching properly.
  • Alcohol causes the kidneys to function less efficiently, leading to an increase in fluid loss.
Blood Vessels
  • 95% of alcohol consumed is absorbed via the stomach and duodenum into the blood stream.
  • Because of this, it flows very quickly to the entire body, every cell and tissue.
  • Alcohol causes red blood cells to stick together in clumps, slowing down blood flow and reducing oxygen levels in the blood.
  • Alcohol also slows down the production of red blood cells, leading to anaemia.
  • Alcohol slows down the ability of white blood cells to destroy bacteria as well as preventing platelets from forming blood clots.

2. Design a small pledge card which demonstrates your choice to live a lifestyle free from the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol. You can make it on special paper and decorate. Email me your design.
Pledge example:
  • "I, ________, choose a lifestyle free from drugs and alcohol."
  • You can design your card however you like. Remember to email me your design at wpspathfinders@gmail.com

  • Keep a log of which passages you read on which days. Try to keep a consistent, daily routine.
    • Ideally, you could also highlight interesting points or colour code different themes, however this is not required.
  • It is recommended you read as much of Luke as you can, but if you can't read the whole book, at the very least read these three passages as we will be discussing them via Seesaw (ask your parents to check their email for a code to join Seesaw):
